JWP Architects have worked with Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV) on a series of projects
at Mt Hotham Alpine Resort since 2019 to bring the resort’s masterplan to fruition.
With prior alpine construction experience and a keen willingness to learn further from the Resort Management Team, JWP has been well-placed to help deliver some outstanding community facilities especially adapted to alpine conditions.
Each project has its own distinctive design elements specific to site conditions, but shares common threads of materials and detailing for a cohesive feel through the village.
The first humble project was the Whiskey Flat Multipurpose Facility, affectionately known as “the Moth”, in recognition of its form being derived from the migratory Bogong Moth that flocks to the mountain over summer and served as a nutritious delicacy at the meeting place between Gunaikurnai and Taungurung peoples at their shared Country boundary along the Great Dividing Range.
This building delivers a training and event hub for Biathlon Australia, cross-country skiers, and those traversing the hiking/cycling trails in Summer.
Alpine Gateway Visitor Centre was the second significant project for ARV. Due to its scale and the extreme site conditions on possibly one of the most exposed sites at Mt Hotham overlooking Loch Dam, it was constructed over 2 years – the dual-level parking in the first year, followed by the day shelter building. As the Western village entry and Hotham-side trail-head, the distinctive building forms take inspiration from the historic huts found along the trail, providing an unparalleled viewing experience down the alpine valleys and out to the surrounding peaks. This facility also serves as a base for Disabled Wintersports Australia, with dedicated change rooms for all-abilities skiing & snowboarding.

Hotham HQ was developed with ARV to seek funding for a milestone project in the village centre, significantly updating and upgrading existing visitor and resort management infrastructure.
Designed with the assistance of a Gunaikurnai working group and input from a suite of community organisations, it is intended to spur the revitalisation of the Hotham Village centre as the catalyst for further commercial development.
